Lost in Space S2
The Robinson family is settling into a temporary home on a new planet in the months after the alien engine flung their ship into the unknown. But Maureen is desperate to find a way back to the Resolute, head to Alpha Centauri and give her kids a chance at a normal life.
2019
We had the privilege of contributing to "Lost in Space" Season 2 from the very beginning, developing concept art and creating VFX across eight episodes. The work included environments, creatures, ships and complicated FX and simulation work to enhance the visual experience of the series.
For Episode 2, we pushed our technical boundaries for FX simulations by creating an epic digital water environment, with a waterfall where the Jupiter is stranded. Production built sets for on-top-of-the-waterfall scenes, while we built a digital environment for dynamic shots. This involved complex simulations, using a procedural approach to handle vast areas and detailed layers of mist and foam. We approached different layers of water simulations by splitting them into sections for efficiency. The waterfall simulation involved proprietary air field solvers and a combination of various secondary simulations like foam and mist to achieve the desired realism.
Our work on the Resolute model involved a complete overhaul, high-res modeling, and detailed look development. Houdini's procedural tools allowed us to manage and update the complex asset efficiently, ensuring it held up under various conditions and camera angles. For this season we also had the honor to design a new vehicle for the show from the ground up! The RRU, a one person utility vehicle used for complex repairs of the Resolute.
We had an absolute blast working on this show and we are immensely proud that our work led to a whooping 4 VES Nominations, and 3 actual Awards!
